North Bull Island Lighthouse (Sunrise)

  • Built: 1880, designed by Bindon Blood Stoney, the engineer behind the construction of the North Bull Wall.

  • The lighthouse and the wall itself were built to improve the channel into Dublin Port by controlling silting — a significant maritime engineering challenge in the 19th century.

  • Material: Wrought iron painted green, marking the starboard (right) side of the channel for ships entering the port — with the corresponding red Poolbeg Lighthouse on the opposite (south) side of the harbour entrance.

  • Height: About 15 m (subject to water level).

  • The tower sits on massive concrete block foundations, originally cast and placed using a floating crane.
